We are fed up with a culture of violence and sexual assault, and all of us are raising our voices. Violence Against Women is a raging issue. #metoo stories of sexual assault raced around the internet, and continue to have repercussions on perpetrators (Harvey Weinstein), but we need response in legislation and enforcement too.
Sept 13, 2017 was the 23rd anniversary of the passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which is severely threatened with Donald Trump (who bragged about committing sexual assault) in office. The VAWA bill is gender-neutral and includes funding for rape crisis centers and hotlines, services for victims with disabilities, legal aide for survivors, and more. Senator Richard Burr voted against reauthorizing VAWA in 2012, and Senator Thom Tillis isn’t on record yet.
This week with ‘Stop the assaults, stop the violence” we are sharing stories of violence, talking about stats and giving you an action to take.
In the US,
– one in four women are victims of domestic violence
– three US Women are murdered by their partners every day
– 1.3 million women reported being raped or sexually assaulted in 2009 (which means many many more happened)
– 15 million children are exposed to domestic violence
All according to the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence.
Please join us for this very special #TuesdaysWithTillis. We need to let Senator Tillis and Senator Burr know that violence against women is not acceptable and we expect them to work to fix it. Further, we need to let Senator Tillis in particular know that in general the culture and agenda of Trump hurts women and we will resist it in massive numbers.
You can get a head start on the action (and take the action even if you can’t join us) at Call Tillis – https://act.weareultraviolet.org/whipcount/no-vawa-cuts-count/?target=8153&akid=&source=&referring_akid=.
