Two bills have recently been introduced to arm our public school teachers with guns. Overwhelmingly, North Carolina’s 110,000 educators oppose arming teachers. We agree! If you agree too, please join our Tweet Storm to share your views with legislators!
Join us Wednesday, March 13th from 7pm -8pm for a TWEET STORM! Our elected representatives need to know how seriously we take the safety of our schools, students and teachers. Arming teachers with guns will NOT make our students safer. Our teachers need resources, not guns. Our schools need counselors, social workers, school psychologists and nurses, not armed teachers.
Be ready to join us and our partners as we rain Tweets on our reps!
We’ll be using the following hashtags to send a clear message that we will oppose any bill intending to ask or require our teachers to carry guns.
•Arm teachers w/ helping professionals to support students in crisis!
•Vote NO on SB192 & HB216.
•Our teachers do NOT need guns! They need fully funded schools!
•Arm our schools with books and supplies, not guns!
Follow these sample tweets w/ the hashtags listed above
Remember to @ your members and legislative leaders, and consider using our sample Tweets, or your own variations, with the proper hashtags in place. (Take care not to draft tweets longer than 130 characters so that you’ll have room for hashtags.)

SIGN OUR PETITION
You can advocate for ways to reduce risks posed to our school children. Keeping guns off school property ensures a safer and more supportive learning environment for our children but we also need more helping professionals, more restorative justice programs, and other constructive ways to improve school safety. Let’s ask for common sense, effective solutions that work. Sign the Petition:(https://www.publicschoolsfirstnc.org/engage/sign-our-petition/)
WHAT THE BILLS SAY:
Senate Bill 192, The School Security Act of 2019, would give teachers a 5 percent raise to become sworn police officers. The teachers could carry concealed weapons in their classrooms and would have arrest powers under the proposal.
House Bill 216, The School Self-Defense Act, would make it legal for teachers and staff members to carry concealed handguns on school grounds “to respond to acts of violence or imminent threats of violence.”
Public Schools First NC strongly affirms that every child, every teacher, every member of a school’s staff is entitled to a safe environment at school. More information on strategies that promote safe and equitable schools can be found in this fact sheet 🙁https://www.publicschoolsfirstnc.org/resources/fact-sheets/safe-and-equitable-schools/).
