Petition Senate Judiciary Committee to Oppose Thomas Farr

January 7 @ 2:00 pm - January 8 @ 11:59 pm

Petition to Tell the Senate Judiciary Committee to Oppose Thomas Farr for Federal Judge.

The nomination of Thomas Farr as a federal judge, with a lifetime appointment, must be stopped. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, the NAACP, and the North Carolina AFL – CIO have all come out against Farr’s nomination. Unfortunately, both NC Senators Burr and Tillis have supported Farr’s nomination. Burr in particular has blocked the attempts of the Obama administration to integrate this region of the federal courts, which has not had a black judge – ever – in its 145 year history.

Thomas Farr’s legal decisions have long shown a pattern of ruling against worker safety and fair treatment. Hence, the opposition from the NC AFL – CIO. In addition, Farr was a supporter of the 2013 NC voter identification law, later struck down by the Fourth Circuit US Court of Appeals, because of the “almost surgical precision” in which it targeted black voters.

Farr was also hired to defend the North Carolina 2011 legislative maps, which were later struck down repeatedly by the court, citing racial gerrymandering as the reason.

Farr’s involvement in the campaigns of Jesse Helms as his campaign lawyer calls into question his ability to be fair and impartial in the district where he will rule if his nomination is approved. Farr served as campaign attorney in the 1984 and 1990 campaigns. Helms, an unabashed and unapologetic segregationist until the end, infamously led a 16 day filibuster against the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. He also engaged in shockingly and openly racist tactics to intimidate black voters, including mailing threatening post cards to predominantly black households.

Given that the Eastern District of NC to which Farr has been nominated is where most of NC’s African American population resides, Thomas Farr’s nomination must not be confirmed.
