Get Hate Out of Winston-Salem

January 13 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join us on Jan. 13 at 1pm at the Confederate monument in downtown Winston to stand against hate and bigotry.

Reach out if your group wants to co-host. We need to be all in.

The monument on 4th street is a reminder that Winston is still failing its Black residents.

Black residents of this city make $0.62 for every dollar made by white residents. Black residents have 1.23 times the death rate of white residents. Black third graders are 60% less likely to read at grade level than white third graders (1).

This does not come from nowhere. This is a legacy of disinvestment and putting Black concerns last. Supporters of the Confederate statue on 4th street claim it’s heritage. The community knows better.

The Confederate monument on was put up in 1905.

Why so late?
Confederate monuments were designed to terrorize and control Black people. Most of these monuments were erected between 1890 and 1960, not immediately following the Civil War (2). During the same time period that 3,446 Black Americans were lynched. At the same time as Jim Crow.

Hate has no place in Winston Salem. Glorifying racists and white supremacists has no place here.
