Dogwood Alliance is a NC-based environmental non-profit dedicated to protecting forests across the South. For twenty-one years, we have been working to promote progressive, environmental policies in the South. Since the recent election of Governor Cooper, we have been excited about his indication of making strides to be a climate leader. But, Roy Cooper is missing an opportunity to protect forests and rural communities because he has remained silent about a critical fight in Richmond County, NC.
Right now, a predominantly black, rural community in Richmond County is being threatened with the construction of a wood pellet mill by Enviva (largest exporter of wood pellets in the US), which will wreck havoc to local forests and release harmful air pollutants. Because Enviva’s permit was obtained without having a public hearing, Gov. Cooper has the opportunity to revoke their permit and protect our forests and communities. Yet, despite receiving over 10,000 petition signatures, hearing from over 60 organizations on the issue, and receiving two meeting requests pertaining to this issue, Gov. Cooper has not been responsive, to date.
As a result, Dogwood Alliance is planning a call-in day of action on September 12th to further vocalize our concerns on this issue. Support us in our campaign to protect the Richmond County community.
